Compilations: All Them Trimmings
Back in the dying days of the 20th Century, brothers Steve and Giles from the legendary AAS-affiliated band Johnny Domino came across a book called “Rock Talk.”
It promised to reveal "the hard work, the heartache, and the fun and excitement of life in the music business." Immediately they were interested.
The book featured a group called Out To Lunch, a duo called Dale and Jonty who “spend most of their time writing songs” in their “bedroom at home”. “I play around on guitar and make up tunes” said Dale, “then I play them to Jonty and he goes away and comes up with some lyrics.”
The story was all too relatable to the Johnny Domino boys.
The book also featured a set of lyrics by Out To Lunch. Lyrics that seemed simultaneously mystifying, impenetrable and ridiculous to the young musicians. A key phrase from the lyrics “...with all of them trimmings” entered their lexicon of obscure references and in-jokes. But they could only imagine how the song might sound. And as far as they could tell, it wasn't even a real song. Out To Lunch wasn't even a real band.
So, decades later, when they started the 'This Are Johnny Domino' podcast, they decided to throw down a challenge to their listeners. Could they manifest the unimaginable? Could they turn these lyrics into a song? The results were at once surprising, revealing and heart-warming, and are presented herewith.
Little did they know that such collective artistic merry-making would lead them towards the Holy Grail, culminating in the grand reveal as Dale himself appeared on the Podcast to unveil the original song, nearly 40 years after Out To Lunch first recorded it!
