Songs: AI Guy

notes / gigs / releases

A man who has never had a job
Is telling me how to do mine
He says he can streamline my workflow in order
To make better use of my time
It will liberate my creativity
When he automates mundane activity

He's one of those guys
Who's in love with AI
But he doesn’t really know what it is

He reckons a robot can write for me
An email that can then be sent
To another inbox where another robot
Can tell someone else what it meant
And the fact that no-one needs to read it
Makes it even more strategic

He's one of those guys
Who's in love with AI
And he makes things that needn't exist

He's come from another world
Where everyone's innovating
He's seen the way we work
And he can’t wait to replace it

He'll save us all from the daily grind
Of having to talk to our friends
Because a robot can tut, a robot can nod
And ask about your weekend
We've got a machine that can make the tea
Why not build one to drink it as well?

He's one of those guys
Who's in love with AI
And we’re buying what he wants to sell

A million billionaires
Have spent a trillion dollars
And that's the reason why
They're foisting AI on us

And the future that he wants
Is a Terminator running HR
Funding and Finance, run by a Dyson
The Digital Team are
And what will we do? I’m glad you ask
We’ll all be working on the server farm

He's one of those guys
Who's in love with AI
I wish someone would automate him

He's one of those guys
Who's in love with AI
And we all know he’s going to win

I went to a work conference and sat next to someone who confidently explained how AI was going to "liberate" everyone from "mundane tasks" and it seemed very much like he viewed all jobs done by people who weren't him (i.e. all jobs) as "mundane" and "uncreative" and he didn't seem to understand why that might annoy people. It also reminded me of about thirty years ago when we were told that increased use of computers would mean less work for everyone, when it actually meant loads more work for everyone as we'd all need to work in massive IT departments fixing things.

So I wrote a song about it - take that, robotic overlords of the future!
