Songs: Like A Sun In The Night
notes / gigs / releasesLate at night on the building site
He's watching windows, his reflection's
Are looking back at another night
That might as well have never happened
Nobody
Ever comes to bother him, there's
Nobody
Knocking on the Portacabin tonight
But when his radio plays
Dark turns into day
The sounds of it shine
Like a sun in the night
Chucking out time was hours ago
She's sat through queues of hungry drunks who
Paid their dues down the metal chute
Now petrol pumps are the only ones who
See her go
She sets off home wrapped in silent armour
Nobody's
Awake enough to try to harm her tonight
Then his radio plays
Dark turns into day
The sounds of it shine
Like a sun in the night
At the sound of the songs she raises her eyes and, to her surprise
A security guard catches her eye, he looks up and smiles and waves his hand, mouthing "Hi!"
It's the first human being he's spoken to tonight
She puts her hand on her hips and does a daft dance as if to say
"This is ridiculous!"
He stands too and they dance together across the road
Two lonely lives making contact in the first hours of the morning
When his radio plays
Dark turns into day
The sounds of it shine
Like a sun in the night
Now every night
He looks for her, she looks for him
There's nobody
Ever sees their silent summers at night
When his radio plays
Dark turns into day
The sounds of it shine
Like a sun in the night

These are the original words to Let The Weird Band Win. There were two building sites and a derelict garage near my house, and when you passed them at night you'd often see a lonely security guard in a portacabin reading a book. Fair enough on a building site, but I did wonder why a run down garage needed securing... anyway, the first line of the song suggested a story about one of these chaps, and the rest flowed from there. Well, I say "flowed", more "oozed" really, as I took quite a while to get right, and I ended up sat in front of my four-track one Saturday afternoon (21sr of February 2004, DATE fans!) trying out all sorts of different melodies and ideas to see which worked. The working title of the song was "Summer Hit", as that's what it sounded like to us in the practice room, and so for a long time the chorus tried to incorporate this - actually, thinking about it, the PLOT of the song also HINGED around this, as I thought it would be quite clever. Unfortunately "hits" led to all sorts of unfortunate rhymes, so when the line "Like A Sun In The Night" fell out of my MIND I abandoned that title and then fell over a completely other way to do it. So I did it that way.
I'm still quite pleased with this, altogether - the fact that it didn't all come directly from my BRANE meant said BRANE had to work in a slightly different way than that to which it has become accustomed, and so also wrote a different kind of lyric.
