A few weeks ago I went to Cambridge to watch a football match. It doesn't matter what happened in that particular football match - who really cares about things like "scores" and "being any good" anyway? - the key thing here is that while waiting for the game to begin the club played "Ready To Go" by Republica over the tannoy.
"Flipping heck," I thought, "people have been playing this song at every sporting event for DECADES, surely there must be something ELSE they could play? HMMM... hang on a minute!"
As my BRANE swung into action (one of the very few people related to Peterborough whose BRANE did THAT all afternoon, but as I say, such things are really no matter) I recalled a story told to me by Mr FA Machine about a time when he was in NICE playing in a covers band. As I remember the story, everyone in the band went to see a football match one day but, having no idea which team to support, instead decided to support SPORT ITSELF and chanted "SPORT!" and so forth throughout the game.
I imagine that the locals found this CHARMING and definitely not some drunken young englishmen taking the mickey, and it struck me that something like this might be an excellent theme for a NEW SONG to be played over tannoys everywhere that sport ITS VERY SELF was played. As I thought this the WORDS started to run headlong into my aforesaid BRANE (there wasn't much to distract me at the time) and by the time I'd got home I had a tune, a set of lyrics, and some HOT PRODUCTION IDEAS to get going with.
One of these was the commentator, which I thought was a very clever reference to a very famous record that I couldn't quite put my finger on - it was only a week or so later, listening to an AAS compilation, that I realised that it's a reference to a Johnny Domino song, which isn't famous, but very much should be!
And thus was - I HOPE - a future SPORTS ANTHEM born. If does NOT become a World Conquering Anthem then at least it TRIED and HEY - that's what SPORT is all about, right kids?
